Ubumi Project Africa in Zambia , is a christian
non-denominational organization established in 1997 with the sole
purpose of providing care and support for registered orphans as
a result of HIV/AIDS. This is done through the participation of
community caregivers (widows/widowers) who have lost their husbands/wives
mainly due to HIV/AIDS.
Ubumi
Africa is a community-based organization in Kitwe, the capital
of Zambia's Copperbelt Province. Ubumi Project has a network of
volunteers in most of the compounds/townships of Kitwe. Our core
programme is to register the orphans, identify their needs, act
as their advocate with the local authorities and society, and
help and encourage the communities to look after their orphans
so that they grow up in as normal environment as possible.
Ubumi
Africa Project in Zambia was set up with an objective of providing
positive prevention, care and support to the affected households
with orphans and people living with AIDS (PLWA). Efforts went
into mobilizing the communities to work with PLWA and caring for
their orphans into a society where widows/widowers and their orphans
are integrated into the community and provided with education,
care and support with the ultimate goal of reducing HIV/STD transmission,
mainly focusing on children, youths, women and situations providing
risk for HIV transmission.
Due
to geographical disadvantage of many rural based support groups,
in 2003 Ubumi project took on an additional role of co-ordinating
two rural development projects in Zambia that are targeting PLWA
(People Living With Aids - women clubs) and agriculture programme
for livelihood support to the youths. These projects are called
Buseko Women's Club for PLWA and Youth Agriculture Investment
programme respectively.
