Frequently Asked Questions:
How much does it cost?
Ubumi Africa does not charge a fee to volunteers. Though Ubumi has plenty of
experience helping volunteers negotiate immigration and plan site seeing
excursions, it is not a volunteer tourism organization. Ubumi is an organization that
works entirely to service destitute and vulnerable children in Zambia, and therefore
does not charge any fee to volunteers. Along the same line, Ubumi does not a
provide a stipend, so volunteers must be able to cover their own living expenses for
the duration of their stay. Depending of the type of accommodation, living expenses
can range anywhere from $300-$600 a month, plus airfare and sight-seeing
expenses.
Does Ubumi provide a stipend?
No. The mission of Ubumi is to support the community in which they work, and
therefore all paid positions are filled by local residents.
How long can I stay?
Volunteers are welcome to stay as long as they fulfill the work agreement completed
by the volunteer and Ubumi management, signed upon arrival. In the past volunteers
have stayed for just an afternoon or for as long as nine months.
Where will I live?
There are several low-cost, fully equipped lodging options for volunteers. If arranged
in advance, Ubumi can provide assistance in finding a home-stay or apartment share.
What is the area like?
Kitwe is a mid-sized city in the Copperbelt region of Zambia. Frequently described
as the "typical African industrial city", Kitwe offers all urban modern amenities, such
as running water, phone lines, hospitals and public transportation, while maintaining
an authentic African feel different from the more Westernized tourist locales.
Volunteers can be sure that they are getting an "real African experience" without
sacrificing their health or safety.
Will there be other volunteers working with me?
Probably not. Occasionally volunteers' stays overlap briefly, but it is rare that they run
completely concurrently unless they arrived together.
Can I contact past volunteers?
Yes! Many of our past volunteers are happy to share their experience and advice.
