Hello! My name is Vidya Misra. I am an Education major from Kent State University in Ohio, USA. I have to come to Zambia to work at the Ubumi Orphanage (although it's more like play than work). My parents and I are living in Kitwe about two miles away from Ubumi. I first heard about Ubumi from a friend of the family, Penelope Frese. She runs a non-profit organization out of Hudson, Ohio called Children of Ubumi.
I am very happy to be here and although I've only been in Zambia about four weeks I am already very busy. At the orphanage, we play games, sing, work on homework, and read together. The kids are very eager learners and very sweet. There are seven children at Ubumi right now but we are expecting more very soon. I also have been updating the website and working on a newsletter for Penelope's organization.
Life in Zambia is lovely. The weather is hot and the people are extremely friendly. I know it will be extremely bittersweet when it is time for me to head back to the US. Please feel free to contact me with any questions about volunteering or donating!
